Finding out which profile is the one used when there are many in the %Appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles folder:
For each profile, check the last modified date on history.dat (the one they used last should be the one that was most recently modified) OR check bookmarks.html (right click open in IE if Firefox isn't working) to make sure that it has all the right bookmarks.
If they created a profile with you or by themselves... the created date for the FOLDER will tell you that.
If none of the last modified dates in the profile are recent, it's possible that they made their own folder in a non-default location. Start profile manager (firefox.exe -profilemanager) and mouseover each profile to see its location (or at least the first part of it).
Last resort: Open profiles.ini (%Appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox) in a text editor which will have the profiles and their paths. -

Some users are reporting connection issues, or Firefox hanging. Safe mode doesn't work, but a new profile does. These users all have the following lines in their prefs.js, removing the lines solves the problem.

user_pref("yahoo.homepage.dontask", true);
user_pref("yahoo.installer.country", "us");
user_pref("yahoo.installer.dc", "v1_msgr");

There are likely memory and/or hard disk errors, as the preferences aren't being updated. Check the Windows Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc, or Start...Control Panel..Administrative Tools...Event Viewer), or dmesg on Linux/Mac. Also, ask about other crashes or strange behavior. If everything seems normal try a new profile, then removing the installation folder and re-installing. -

If a user is having a problem that may be caused by an add-on, try finding that add-on's page on http://addons.mozilla.org and check the comments to see if other users have reported the same problem. If they have, they'll often post a workaround if one is available (or suggest the user do this themselves).

Firefox add-ons can provide content filtering, but cannot prevent people from working around or disabling such filtering. Add-ons can be disabled within Firefox or manually deleted from the hard drive. If you need comprehensive content filtering that prevents potential workarounds, third party parental control software is suggested. A free Firefox add-on for content filtering by category, ProCon Latte, is available from: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1803
